Virtualization (VM) technology isn’t new – it has been part of mainframes for 30 years or so – the current wave of server virtualization has been driven largely by a relative newcomer to the market, VMware. That pace of growth will only increase as other vendors, large (notably Microsoft) and small, deliver a wide range of server virtualization and virtualization management products. Only slightly more than 5% of the installed base of Windows and Linux servers had been virtualized as of the end of 2007.
