It’s easy to lump the notion of Enterprise 2.0 in with other loosely defined industry terms like SOA and Web 2.0. But whatever you think of the nomenclature, one thing is clear: organizations in today’s global marketplace need to work more efficiently and enable employees to better engage with their coworkers, business partners, and customers across computing systems and technologies.
By integrating Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) into everyday processes as part of Enterprise 2.0 strategies, companies are boosting employee productivity and service levels, while lowering overall operating costs. RIAs access local and remote data stores, run online and offline, and use Web services to provide rich and powerful user experiences.
Companies worldwide are shifting to Enterprise 2.0 strategies built on RIAs to automatically pre-populate online forms, initiate and route forms as part of processes, and instantly assign security and permissions to confidential information. For instance, Siemens Healthcare developed a powerful health information system (HIS) that dynamically adapts to users, presenting a different interface to people depending on their roles, languages, and other variables. The adaptive interface eliminates the need to manage stacks of medical charts and helps healthcare professionals quickly complete tasks and improve patient care. Nurses, physicians, and other providers can easily see and update patient information, including health history, lab results, and medications administered.
The dynamic data visualization capabilities supported by RIAs are fundamentally changing how people engage with business processes. At the San Diego County Department of Child Support Services (SDDCSS), a RIA dashboard automates client processing, tracking, and reporting for thousands of cases. Using a front end developed with Adobe Flex and middle-tier and backend services developed with Adobe LiveCycle Data Services and Adobe ColdFusion, the application provides an outstanding data visualization experience for users.
As child support parties arrive, cases are checked into the system. Once the parties and department personnel confer, the disposition of the court order is entered into the system. If a case cannot be mediated at the walk-in counter, it is referred to court and the attorneys in the courtroom are notified via the application in real-time, gaining immediate visibility into who checked in and when, and what actions were taken.
Many other organizations are also experiencing firsthand the benefits of Enterprise 2.0. At a government security agency, Adobe solutions were used to create a desktop version of a web-based application for tracking drug trafficking cases between the U.S. and another country. A law enforcement officer can interview eyewitnesses and suspects, enter the information directly into an Adobe AIR desktop application, and then synchronize it into a database when Internet access is available. The application supports accurate data capture and dissemination and provides a reliable and accessible way to share information between federal officers working in the U.S and abroad.
As highlighted, RIAs enhance user interaction with data, information processing, and can be delivered consistently across operating systems and devices. By using RIAs to modernize operations, enterprises are engaging more people in processes and providing more reliable access to services where and when they are needed.
